Field notes from the Isis Pilot

Nearly three years since rumors began to swirl that the major mobile network operators (MNOs) sought to provide NFC payments, the Isis mobile wallet finally launched in late October 2012.  While the initial rollout is focused on only two cities (Austin, TX and Salt Lake City, UT) and handset availability and merchant acceptance are still limited, Isis’s market entry is a milestone in the evolution of mobile payments.  First Annapolis has been tracking the Isis launch (primarily in Austin) and testing the wallet, and below we provide our observations to-date.

Banco Sabadell NFC m-payments pilot

Spanish financial services provider Banco Sabadell, in partnership with Telefonica and BlackBerry, have launched a pilot project for contactless payments with NFC-enabled mobile phones. Trial participants, which are also Banco Sabadell customers, can pay for purchases directly from their mobile phones which come with a Visa card built in the phone's SIM card.

China Unicom selects Gemalto in China’s first NFC payment service

Gemalto announced that its UpTeq NFC SIM card has been selected by China Unicom to secure its mobile wallet program. China Unicom is the nation’s second-largest wireless operator, with more than 220 million subscribers in which over 60 million are on 3G. The Unicom Merchants’ Bank mobile wallet is the first NFC payment service being launched in China, in a joint collaboration between China Unicom and China Merchants Bank (CMB) for the mobile wallet itself.

GlobalPlatform, the organization that standardizes the management of applications on secure chip technology, has advanced its specification for the Management of Mobile NFC Services to specifically address how service providers can connect and communicate with other actors operating within the near-field-communication (NFC) ecosystem.  The specification has been created based on input from industry bodies, including the European Payments Council, GSMA and the Association Française pour le ‘Sans Contact’ Mobile (AFSCM).
